Archaeology of Traces at Sendlinger Tor
During the five years of construction work at Sendlinger Tor, I documented the exposed walls of the subway station—before they disappeared forever. These weathered surfaces tell stories of decades of urban life.
More Than Just Documentation
My work goes beyond mere photography: Through deliberate painterly interventions—acrylic lines, pigments, markings—I transform the traces I find into artistic statements. I work like an archaeologist who not only preserves artifacts but also interprets them. A crack becomes a line; a shadow becomes a composition. Every mark follows what is already there—I amplify the stories that lie dormant within the walls.
Between Worlds
This collection of traces combines documentary precision with artistic vision. While traditional urban photography shows what is visible, I make the overlooked visible. The city’s scars become its poetry. Each of these surfaces now exists only in my photographs—the subway station has been completely renovated. What remains are the traces of a vanishing city.
Artist’s Statement
I see my art as the archaeology of traces. All of my works—from *Under Construction* to series such as *Neo Man*, *Time & Traffic*, or *Es wird einmal gewesen sein*—are about making fragments, transitions, and layers visible. I’m interested in what is overlooked in everyday life: cracks, shadows, faded colors, signs of the times. My method combines photography and painting. I document existing traces while simultaneously making deliberate interventions—lines, pigments, markings. This results in images that are neither pure documentation nor pure fiction, but rather spaces of resonance. Reality appears not as something finished, but as a process—in flux, in the viewer’s gaze, and in dialogue with the viewer.
